Crawfurd Adamson

"Deep in Thought," reproduced with permission by Crawfurd Adamson

Well, last time was local, this time we’ll skip straight to foreign. Crawfurd Adamson is from the British Isles (born in Edinburgh, and Artist A Day places him in East Sussex.) He’s also been an artist a very healthy long time from his site, with bodies of work dating back three decades on his site. His work in the 80s isn’t entirely to my taste, but in the 90s he seems to have settled into a very solid voice, and his work gained a more unified and bolder style than the decade before. His paintings (my primary love in his portfolio), are grouped by solitary figures and groups, which might give you an indication what subject matter he tackles most. His paint handling is really powerful, bold, with large, flat swatches of color defining the figures.

The captions below his paintings indicate they’re all done in oil, but his handling and style keeps a looseness, a fluidity, that reminds me more of watercolor than oil work.

And, for the record, his style also translates well into pastels, as the piece off to the left here might indicate. All-in-all, there’s a wonderful, powerful uniformity to Crawfurd’s work, and I think you’ll find it worth the time to hop over them and give him a look.

For those of you in New York (if any of you), his site indicates he has work in the permanent collection at the Metro. Hope to see that in person myself someday.
